Dr. Raghu Ram, Founding Director of the KIMS–USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases, has been elected to the Governing Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG). He is the first surgeon from India to be elected to this position.

The RCPSG, a 425-year-old institution, is one of the oldest in the world and the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the UK and Ireland, representing professionals from 97 countries.

The election results were announced by RCPSG President Prof. Hany Eteiba during the Annual General Body Meeting held in Glasgow on December 5, 2025.

The Governing Council has one designated seat for a surgeon practising outside the UK. This year, 26 international surgeons contested for this position, marking the highest number of nominations for the post in the collective history of UK Royal Colleges.

Dr. Raghu Ram will serve as a Governing Council Member for the 2025–2028 term, representing the College in countries outside the UK. Since 2000, he has led 12 overseas FRCS/MRCS preparatory courses in Hyderabad, helping more than 2,000 trainees from South Asia prepare for these examinations. His work has contributed to strengthening the College’s academic presence in India.

Congratulating him, Prof. Eteiba noted that the College had received a record number of nominations, and described the election as a significant moment for the institution.

In his response, Dr. Raghu Ram expressed appreciation for the support of RCPSG Members and Fellows and stated that he aims to contribute to professional development and the College’s global engagement.

Dr. Raghu Ram is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a recipient of the Padma Shri and Dr. B.C. Roy National Award. He was recently awarded the Honorary FRCS (Glasgow), the highest honour of the College, and is among the few globally to hold both the FRCS by examination and an Honorary Fellowship from the same institution.
