On June 6, India recorded 4,866 new Covid-19 cases and seven related fatalities, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The surge takes the total active cases to around 5,000.
Kerala reported the highest number of new cases at 1,487, followed by Delhi (562) and West Bengal (538). Other states with a significant number of active cases include Maharashtra (526), Gujarat (508), and Karnataka (436). These six states together account for 83% of the country’s current active caseload.
Of the seven reported deaths, Maharashtra accounted for three, while Delhi and Karnataka each reported two. All the deceased individuals had pre-existing health conditions such as pneumonia or cardiovascular disease. Five of the victims were aged over 60. The remaining two were a 42-year-old from Delhi and a five-month-old infant from Karnataka, both with multiple health complications.
Despite the rise in cases, hospital admissions remain low, with most patients experiencing mild symptoms and recovering at home. In response, the Central government has initiated mock drills across public hospitals to evaluate Covid preparedness. These drills include checks on oxygen availability, isolation facilities, ventilator readiness, and essential medicines.
On June 2, a nationwide drill was conducted to assess oxygen infrastructure, including PSA oxygen plants, LMO tanks, and medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS). Authorities have been advised to ensure readiness across all healthcare facilities.
