The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for heightened vigilance to tackle health threats emerging from the monsoon and the broader impact of climate change. It raised concerns over the growing incidence of infectious fevers, water-borne illnesses and even cholera once believed to have been eradicated. The IMA also pointed out that the healthcare system is facing new challenges from rare and emerging infectious diseases.

The association urged the government to address workforce shortages by filling vacant positions in the health sector. It emphasized the need for increased provision of preventive supplies, medicines and financial assistance. While Kerala is at the forefront of disease diagnosis and treatment, the IMA noted that inadequate preventive measures are contributing to the spread of illnesses.

Raising public awareness about hygiene both personal and environmental as well as the importance of effective treatment systems, is essential, the IMA stressed. It also highlighted the urgency of ensuring access to safe food and drinking water. Eliminating sources of infection should be a priority to stop disease transmission at its root, the organization said.

Pledging its full cooperation, the IMA committed to supporting integrated and comprehensive efforts against disease outbreaks. Members have been instructed to actively participate in both preventive and curative initiatives. The association assured that volunteer groups and support systems would be mobilized during emergencies. It also noted that disaster response units, epidemic control cells and medical teams are already functioning at state and district levels.

To strengthen coordination, the IMA has called on the government to establish a state-level committee dedicated to overseeing and enhancing health-related activities during the monsoon.
