The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kerala, has urged the state government to introduce a special holiday-duty allowance for doctors, nurses and other hospital staff who work on public holidays, arguing that healthcare workers deserve recognition comparable to other essential services.
Demand Follows Police Holiday Allowance
The demand comes after the Kerala government sanctioned a holiday-duty allowance for police personnel. The IMA has called for a similar provision for healthcare workers who remain on duty while the rest of the workforce observes public holidays.
Hospitals Remain Operational 365 Days
IMA Kerala state president Dr M N Menon said hospitals cannot shut down even during major festivals such as Onam, Vishu and Christmas. Emergency departments, intensive care units, operation theatres, labour rooms, casualty services and ambulances must continue operating without interruption.
Healthcare Staff Sacrifice Family Holidays
According to Menon, doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel, technicians, pharmacists, ambulance workers and other hospital employees regularly give up holidays and family time to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
IMA Calls for Recognition Beyond Pay
The IMA said the proposed allowance should not be viewed merely as a financial benefit. It would also serve as formal recognition of the commitment and sacrifices made by healthcare workers who provide essential services throughout the year.
Menon said those responsible for protecting public health deserve recognition on par with those entrusted with maintaining public safety.
