New funding from alumnus Rakesh Gangwal to accelerate Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, with plans for a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and 200-bed cancer research centre.
₹300 Crore Additional Contribution
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has received an additional ₹300 crore contribution from alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal to accelerate the expansion of its Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology (GSMST).
The latest contribution takes Gangwal’s cumulative support for the School to ₹400 crore, strengthening IIT Kanpur’s plans to establish a medical school that combines medicine, engineering, science and technology.
Matching Grants to Further Strengthen Funding
To encourage wider participation from alumni, philanthropists and other supporters, IIT Kanpur will provide matching grants against contributions of up to ₹300 crore towards the development of the School.
The initiative is expected to create a stronger funding base for the Institute’s ambitions in medical education, clinical research, healthcare innovation and MedTech development.
500-Bed Hospital and Cancer Centre Planned
As part of the development roadmap, IIT Kanpur plans to establish a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on its campus. A 200-bed cancer care and research centre has also been proposed.
The planned facilities are expected to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery while bringing together doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts to develop solutions for emerging healthcare challenges.
IIT Kanpur Expands Medicine-Technology Integration
IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal said the Institute entered the medical field with the vision of using interdisciplinary research and innovation to transform healthcare delivery, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.
He noted that Gangwal’s earlier ₹100 crore contribution in 2022 helped the Institute initiate its plans, while the latest ₹300 crore support is expected to accelerate their implementation.
Focus on Future Healthcare and MedTech
Prof. Anil K. Lalwani, recently appointed Dean of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, described the contribution as a significant example of how individual support can catalyse transformation in healthcare and education.
Rakesh Gangwal, Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kanpur, said he was honoured to be associated with what he described as an innovative and first-of-its-kind medical institution.
The Gangwal School aims to leverage IIT Kanpur’s strengths in engineering, science and technology alongside medical sciences, with a focus on advanced academic programmes, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine and MedTech innovation.

The expanded funding and planned healthcare infrastructure mark a major step in IIT Kanpur’s efforts to build an integrated ecosystem where medicine and technology converge. The Institute expects the initiative to contribute to healthcare innovation and translate technological advances into solutions with wider societal impact.
Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur is an Institute of National Importance and operates across a 1,050-acre campus, with 20 departments, 27 centres, three interdisciplinary programmes and three specialised schools.
