The Himachal Pradesh government is considering introducing a Non-Practicing Allowance (NPA) for Medical Officers (Specialists), Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Sept 7. The announcement came during a Health Department meeting, where the Chief Minister also outlined an ₹800-crore plan to strengthen cancer care institutions across the state.
₹800 Crore Push for Cancer Care
Sukhu said the state government is committed to providing world-class healthcare services within Himachal Pradesh. In view of the rising number of cancer cases, the government will invest ₹800 crore to strengthen cancer treatment and care facilities.
He also directed the formation of an expert committee to prepare a future roadmap for strengthening cancer care institutions across the state.
Advanced Equipment and Treatment
The Chief Minister said the state is procuring high-end medical machines and equipment comparable to those available at AIIMS Delhi to improve diagnostic and patient-care facilities.
The government is also exploring the adoption of advanced healthcare technologies, including gene therapy and molecular therapy, to enhance cancer treatment capabilities.
Exposure Visits for Medical Students and Faculty
Sukhu said the government plans to organise exposure visits to renowned healthcare institutions abroad for medical students and faculty. The objective is to familiarise them with advanced treatment practices and help incorporate modern healthcare techniques into institutions across Himachal Pradesh.
Focus on Medical Colleges and Vacant Posts
The Chief Minister said strengthening all medical colleges remains a priority for the state government. He also emphasised the need to fill vacant posts in healthcare institutions to improve the availability and quality of medical services.
