The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified its position on seasonal influenza vaccination following media reports that it said contained misleading information about its recommendations.
ICMR said the reports appeared to refer to a note on influenza issued around two months ago. The council clarified that the document was intended as clinical guidance for medical practitioners and should not be interpreted as a new or recent advisory on influenza vaccination.
According to ICMR, the Northern Hemisphere seasonal influenza vaccine is preferred. However, if it is not available, the Southern Hemisphere vaccine can also be used, as both provide protection against the currently circulating H1N1 strain.
The council also clarified reports suggesting that influenza vaccines are unavailable in India. It said appropriate seasonal influenza vaccines, including Northern Hemisphere formulations, are available through leading pharmacies and can be taken voluntarily, particularly by people at higher risk of severe disease.
Who should consider seasonal influenza vaccination?
ICMR highlighted vaccination particularly for vulnerable groups, including:
- Elderly individuals
- Pregnant women
- People with underlying health conditions
- Immunocompromised individuals
ICMR said its recommendations are aligned with applicable World Health Organization (WHO) guidance and current scientific evidence. The council also urged media organisations to report scientific recommendations accurately and in their appropriate context.
