South Gujarat is set for a major expansion of healthcare and medical education with the development of an 800-bed hospital and 150-seat MBBS medical college in Vyara, Tapi district. The project is being undertaken by the UNM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Torrent Group, in partnership with the Gujarat government under a 33-year public-private partnership concession. The project has an estimated investment of ₹910 crore. The new healthcare campus will include the 800-bed hospital, MBBS medical college and student hostel and is being developed through the expansion and redevelopment of the existing UNM General Hospital campus.
317-bed facility inaugurated
As part of the redevelopment, a 317-bed transitional hospital has been established at the existing campus. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the facility on September 22, 2026, and also laid the foundation for the proposed 800-bed hospital.
The transitional hospital includes 271 ward beds and 46 critical-care beds, including ICU, NICU/PICU and emergency beds. It also has 24 OPD rooms, four operation theatres, an eight-bed dialysis unit, diagnostic laboratories, a blood storage centre and other support facilities. With the new facility, OPD capacity has increased from approximately 700 to 1,200 patients per day.
Healthcare focus on Tapi and neighbouring areas
The project is expected to expand access to specialised healthcare for residents of Tapi and adjoining areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra, particularly tribal and rural communities.
According to project information, the healthcare hub is expected to serve nearly 8 lakh people. The development is also intended to reduce the need for patients from the region to travel to larger urban centres such as Surat for specialised treatment.
150 MBBS seats planned
The proposed medical college will have 150 MBBS seats, alongside a dedicated student hostel. Once the required regulatory permissions are obtained, the institution could add to the medical education capacity available in South Gujarat.
However, MBBS admissions have not been announced merely on the basis of the project proposal. The college will require applicable approvals and permissions from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and other relevant authorities before seats can be included in an official counselling process.
Admission year, fees, eligibility, seat distribution and counselling details will therefore depend on subsequent official notifications.
Expansion of Torrent Group’s healthcare presence
The Vyara project marks a further expansion of the healthcare initiatives associated with the UNM Foundation and Torrent Group in Gujarat. By combining a large hospital with medical education, the project is planned as an integrated healthcare and academic facility for the region.
If completed and approved as planned, the project will add both tertiary healthcare capacity and 150 MBBS seats to South Gujarat’s healthcare and medical education infrastructure.
