The Goa government has approved a revision in stipends and salaries for postgraduate (PG) resident doctors and contractual teaching staff at Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, effective January 1, 2026. The decision comes nearly three months after assurances were given by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to the Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD).
Under the revised structure, first-year PG resident doctors will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 80,000, up from Rs 60,000. Second-year residents will get Rs 85,000 instead of Rs 62,500, while third-year residents will receive Rs 90,000, compared to the earlier Rs 65,000. The monthly remuneration for tutors has been increased from Rs 85,000 to Rs 95,000, and for lecturers from Rs 95,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh.
In addition to the pay revision, the government has approved a 5 percent annual increment for doctors working under these categories, to be extended in the coming years. Doctors associated with GARD and serving at GMC will be covered under the revised structure.
The decision follows a meeting held in October 2025 between GARD representatives and the Chief Minister, during which the association raised concerns over the stipend structure remaining unchanged since 2015 despite rising inflation and increased workloads. GARD had also pointed out that several other states offer higher stipends to resident doctors.
Announcing the revision, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the move was aimed at acknowledging the contribution of doctors involved in patient care at GMC.
GARD welcomed the decision, stating that the revision addresses a long-pending issue and was achieved through discussions with the state government. The association said it would continue to engage with the administration on matters concerning resident doctors and the state’s healthcare system.
