The Delhi government is preparing to take action against Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh after an inquiry led by the district magistrate uncovered several alleged irregularities and lapses in patient care, officials from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said on June 25.
The investigation was initiated on the instructions of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following a complaint received during a public grievance hearing at the Chief Minister Jan Seva Sadan. The complainant’s family alleged that their son, who had suffered stab wounds in Shalimar Bagh, was not provided immediate medical attention by the hospital and that payment was sought before treatment was administered. They claimed that the delay in treatment contributed to his death.
Acting on the Chief Minister’s directive, a team headed by Central-North District Magistrate S.S. Parihar, along with officials from the health department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), fire department, and other agencies, conducted an inspection of the hospital on June 25.
According to the CMO, the inspection revealed several alleged violations, including breaches of building regulations, unauthorized construction, shortcomings in fire safety measures, improper use of basement areas, and serious non-compliance with standard medical treatment protocols.
The inquiry panel also reviewed CCTV footage and records from the hospital’s emergency department. Officials stated that the footage showed the injured man entering the emergency ward on his own, suggesting that prompt medical intervention might have improved his chances of survival.
Authorities said that a comprehensive inquiry report is currently being prepared, and further action will be taken based on its findings.
Responding to the allegations, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, said in a statement that it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient care, clinical excellence, and regulatory compliance. The hospital added that it would examine the details of the inquiry once they are formally communicated and would fully cooperate with the authorities, emphasizing that patient safety and well-being remain its top priorities.
