Fortis Healthcare has inaugurated a 36-bed hospital dedicated to mental healthcare and plans to set up 10 such facilities across India over the next three years.

Named Adayu, the in-patient mental health facility has been developed to address the rising demand for structured and comprehensive psychiatric care in the country. The hospital brings together a multidisciplinary team comprising psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counsellors and arts-based therapists, supported by nutritionists, physiotherapists and yoga practitioners to provide holistic treatment.

India continues to face a substantial mental health burden, with nearly one in seven people affected by some form of mental illness, Fortis said. At the same time, the country is grappling with a severe shortage of mental health professionals and specialised infrastructure.

According to the healthcare provider, India has only four public mental health beds per one lakh population, underscoring the limited availability of specialist services. As a result, an estimated 70–90 per cent of individuals living with mental health conditions do not receive adequate treatment or long-term care.

“Adayu represents a transformative milestone in India’s mental healthcare journey by addressing long-standing gaps in infrastructure, investment and systemic integration within the healthcare framework,” said Fortis Healthcare Managing Director and CEO Ashutosh Raghuvanshi.

He added that beyond being a purpose-built in-patient facility, the initiative signals the beginning of a broader shift toward a stronger and more inclusive mental health ecosystem. The Gurugram hospital is the first in a planned network of dedicated mental health hospitals, with the next facility expected to open in Mohali, Punjab.

Fortis aims to establish a total of 10 such centres over the next three years, Raghuvanshi said.

“With Adayu, Fortis Healthcare reiterates its commitment to bridging India’s mental health treatment gap and ensuring that mental well-being receives the same priority, investment and respect as any other medical specialty,” said Samir Parikh, Chairperson, Mental Health Programme, Fortis Healthcare.
