The cardiology department of Mission Hospital, Bareilly, has achieved a remarkable milestone. For the first time in the city’s medical history, an advanced Leadless Pacemaker has been implanted without any incision or wires.
Using the latest “Leadless Pacemaker” technology, an 87‑year‑old patient successfully received the device directly in the heart without any surgical cuts or leads.
Dr. Tanmay Agrawal, Senior Cardiologist at Mission Hospital and an alumnus of BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, performed the procedure. He explained that the device, developed by leading medical technology company Medtronic, is called Micra VR II and is currently the smallest pacemaker in the world. Remarkably, the device has a battery life of about 16–17 years.
Dr. Agrawal shared that this leadless pacemaker costs approximately ₹13 lakh. He emphasized that although the technology is expensive, it is a boon for elderly patients as it ensures faster recovery, minimal discomfort, and a much smoother post‑operative experience.
Speaking about the patient’s experience, Dr. Agrawal said the patient was delighted to learn that this was a one‑of‑a‑kind procedure in the region and only the second successful implantation in the state. The patient was fully informed about the device and the procedure beforehand and expressed happiness after the surgery.
Dr. Agrawal noted that the implantation itself took only 30 minutes, and the patient was discharged within 24 hours. What sets this technology apart is that it requires neither an incision nor leads. The device is implanted directly into the heart through a vein in the leg, significantly reducing the risk of infection and enabling a quicker recovery.
Highlighting the impact of this achievement, Dr. Agrawal added that patients in Bareilly no longer need to travel to major cities like Delhi or Lucknow for such advanced treatments. World‑class cardiac care is now available right here in Bareilly.
