Dr Vineet Talwar Takes Over as Medical Director of RGCIRC

Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) has appointed senior medical oncologist Dr Vineet Talwar as its Medical Director, effective September 1, 2026. With more than two decades of association with the institute, Dr Talwar brings extensive experience in clinical oncology, academic training, research and multidisciplinary cancer care to his new leadership role.

Over Two Decades of Association with RGCIRC

Dr Talwar has been associated with RGCIRC’s Department of Medical Oncology since May 2000 and was previously serving as Director of Medical Oncology. During his tenure, he has contributed significantly to strengthening the institute’s medical oncology services while also playing an active role in clinical research, academic programmes and multidisciplinary cancer care.

He holds a DM in Medical Oncology from the Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai, and has authored more than 140 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals.

Expertise Across Multiple Oncology Specialties

Dr Talwar’s clinical interests include genitourinary oncology, gastrointestinal oncology, hepatopancreatobiliary oncology and breast oncology. He has also been actively involved in Phase II, III and IV clinical trials.

His academic contributions include serving in several institutional roles, including as an examiner for DNB Medical Oncology trainees. His professional affiliations include the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Indian Society of Oncology (ISO) and Indian Cooperative Oncology Network (ICON).

He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), Edinburgh, and has received several professional recognitions, including the Chikitsa Ratan Award and multiple academic orations.

Focus on Clinical Excellence, Research and Technology

As Medical Director, Dr Talwar will work closely with RGCIRC’s leadership and clinical teams to further strengthen multidisciplinary cancer care, quality standards, academic programmes and research initiatives across the institute.

Commenting on his elevation, Dr Vineet Talwar said the institute had been an integral part of his professional journey for more than two decades. He said his focus in the new role would be on bringing together clinical excellence, multidisciplinary decision-making, research and compassionate care.

He also highlighted the importance of AI and other emerging technologies in enhancing clinical decision-making, improving patient outcomes and delivering greater value to patients.

RGCIRC Leadership Welcomes Appointment

Dr Dharmendra Singh Gangwar, CEO, RGCIRC, said Dr Talwar had made significant contributions to the institute as a clinician, academician and researcher.

According to Dr Gangwar, Dr Talwar’s deep understanding of oncology, institutional experience and commitment to patient care position him well to lead as Medical Director. He expressed confidence that Dr Talwar’s leadership would further strengthen clinical integration, academic excellence and research at RGCIRC.

Strengthening Institutional Leadership

Dr Talwar’s elevation comes as RGCIRC continues to expand its clinical and research capabilities, with a growing emphasis on multidisciplinary and evidence-based oncology.

The appointment also reflects the institute’s focus on strengthening medical leadership from within and building on established clinical expertise and institutional continuity.
