The Telangana government has appointed Dr. K. Ramesh Reddy as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), effective immediately. Dr. Reddy is currently the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC), Yadadri Bhongir.
The appointment order, issued on Thursday, December 4, 2025, by Health Department Secretary Christian Z. Chongthu, invokes Section 12 of the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences Act, 1986. As per the notification, Dr. Reddy will hold the position until further instructions are issued.
Dr. Reddy has held several key positions over his extensive career. He earlier served as Director of Medical Education from 2017 to 2023, Principal of Gandhi Medical College, Commissioner of Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, and Professor and Head of Paediatric Surgery at Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad. He has also been a member of the Medical Council of India, Vice Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Council, and Secretary General of the Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors’ Association (APGDA), which represents government doctors in the state.
His previous tenure as Director of Medical Education, appointed on an ad-hoc basis in 2022, had faced legal scrutiny. Dr. Narender Kumar, senior to Dr. Reddy in the Additional Director’s seniority list, challenged the extension of his tenure in the High Court. The court had earlier intervened in 2017 when Dr. Reddy was appointed without an approved seniority list, prompting the preparation of a final list in 2021, based on which promotions were later made.
The latest appointment comes just days after reports of the KNRUHS Vice-Chancellor’s resignation amid allegations of serious irregularities and discrepancies in the evaluation of postgraduate (MD/MS) theory examinations. In light of the situation, the state government is reportedly considering appointing an IAS officer as the next full-time Vice-Chancellor.
