Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital has inaugurated a specialised Corneal Transplant and Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre in Ebene, Mauritius, marking a significant expansion of advanced eye-care services in the region.
Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool formally opened the facility. According to a press release, the centre is designed to function as a regional referral hub for complex corneal procedures, serving patients from Mauritius as well as neighbouring African nations.
Addressing the inauguration, President Gokhool said the establishment of the centre highlights the deepening cooperation between Mauritius and India in the healthcare sector and is expected to improve access to advanced ophthalmic treatments across the region.
The centre will provide cutting-edge surgical techniques developed in India, including Pre-Descemet’s Endothelial Keratoplasty (PDEK), Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segment (CAIRS) surgery, and pinhole pupilloplasty.
CAIRS is a novel procedure used in the management of keratoconus, a progressive condition in which the cornea becomes thin and cone-shaped. Pinhole pupilloplasty, meanwhile, helps reduce light scatter and complex visual distortions caused by scarred or irregular corneas, and may offer an alternative in situations where donor corneas are limited.
