In a significant step towards strengthening public healthcare infrastructure in the national capital, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has approved a proposal to merge four major government hospitals in East Delhi into a single autonomous, multispeciality institution modelled on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The proposed integration aims to improve access to specialised treatment, streamline hospital administration, optimise the use of existing infrastructure and expand medical education and research opportunities.

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh confirmed the approval stating that the government would soon invite tenders for the next stage of the process. According to the minister, the proposed institution is expected to directly benefit approximately 60 lakh people living in the Trans-Yamuna region while also serving patients from other parts of Delhi.

Four Major Hospitals to Come Under One Umbrella

The proposed institution will bring together the following government hospitals and healthcare institutions located in Dilshad Garden and surrounding areas of East Delhi:

One of the principal reasons behind the proposed merger is the uneven distribution of patient loads and healthcare resources across the four institutions. While GTB Hospital faces substantial pressure from a high volume of patients, some facilities at the other hospitals have not been utilised to their full potential. By integrating the institutions, the government intends to reduce duplication of services, improve coordination between departments and distribute patients more efficiently according to their medical requirements. Shared administrative systems and coordinated referrals could also help patients access specialised services without facing unnecessary procedural hurdles.

Medical Education and Research to Receive a Boost

The proposed integration is expected to strengthen medical education alongside patient care. By pooling teaching positions and academic resources across the participating institutions, the government aims to create opportunities to increase postgraduate medical seats and expand capacity for undergraduate MBBS education.

GTB Hospital’s association with UCMS provides an established academic foundation while the other institutions bring specialised clinical services and medical expertise. Integrating these resources could enable medical students and postgraduate trainees to gain broader clinical exposure across multiple specialities.

The initiative could also create opportunities for greater collaboration in clinical research, specialised training and multidisciplinary treatment. However, the actual increase in medical seats will depend on regulatory requirements, faculty availability, infrastructure and the final institutional framework. However, the success of the initiative will depend on more than administrative consolidation. Adequate staffing, recruitment of specialist doctors, investment in diagnostic equipment, infrastructure upgrades and clear arrangements for employees across the institutions will be essential to translating the proposal into better patient outcomes.

The proposed merger represents an effort to develop an integrated public healthcare institution with a broader clinical and academic base. Whether it can achieve the standards associated with AIIMS will ultimately depend on the quality of its implementation, sustained investment and the availability of skilled medical personnel.
