Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the dissolution of the Delhi Medical Council (DMC), citing alleged mismanagement and procedural violations. Acting on a proposal from the Delhi Health Department, LG Saxena directed the department to reconstitute the council within two months.
In his official note, LG Saxena stated that the Council had “exceeded” and “abused” its powers under the DMC Act. He also confirmed that the proposal for dissolution had been approved by the Chief Minister and would now be implemented. Two ex-officio members will remain, while the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) will temporarily take over the Council’s functions and act as Registrar until the new Council is formed.
According to PTI and Indian Express reports, the dissolution follows allegations that the Council had acted beyond its legal authority. Specifically, it was found that the Council had unilaterally extended the retirement age of its Registrar from 60 to 65 years and later granted an additional one-year extension starting December 1, 2024 all without proper government approval.
The Health Department had earlier issued a show-cause notice in February this year. The Council responded by stating that the Registrar had resigned with immediate effect, but failed to provide further clarification.
The Delhi Medical Council, a statutory autonomous body established under the Delhi Medical Council Act, 1997, is responsible for regulating the practice of modern medicine in the city and investigating cases of medical negligence and professional misconduct. It consists of 25 members, including elected representatives from the medical community and government nominees.
