Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a major expansion of the capital’s healthcare infrastructure including the establishment of a new medical college in Dwarka at an estimated cost of ₹805.99 crore. The proposed medical college is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare services and medical education capacity in the national capital. Officials said the project forms part of the Delhi government’s broader strategy to improve public healthcare infrastructure, increase availability of doctors and expand access to advanced medical facilities.

According to government officials the new institution will include a teaching hospital equipped with modern medical infrastructure, specialised departments, advanced diagnostic facilities and additional hospital beds to cater to the growing healthcare needs of Delhi’s population. The project is expected to enhance both patient care services and medical education opportunities in the region. The Dwarka medical college is also likely to reduce pressure on existing government hospitals and teaching institutions in Delhi, many of which continue to experience high patient loads and resource constraints. Officials said the initiative aligns with the government’s focus on strengthening healthcare delivery systems through infrastructure expansion, technology integration and improved medical training capacity.

Healthcare experts believe the addition of new government medical colleges can help address long-standing gaps in doctor-to-population ratios while simultaneously improving tertiary care services in urban centres. The announcement comes at a time when several states are increasing investments in healthcare infrastructure and medical education following lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed limitations in hospital capacity and public health preparedness.

Officials added that the upcoming facility is expected to serve not only residents of Dwarka and South-West Delhi but also neighbouring regions that depend on the capital for advanced medical treatment. The project reflects a larger national trend toward expanding healthcare and medical education infrastructure as India seeks to strengthen its public health system and meet growing demand for affordable, quality healthcare services.
