The Chhattisgarh government has revised the designations of several nursing posts in state-run healthcare institutions. The announcement was made by Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal during an event organised on the occasion of International Nurses Day.

As part of the changes, the post of Staff Nurse has been redesignated as Nursing Officer, while Nursing Sister will now be known as Senior Nursing Officer, according to a UNI report.

Speaking at the programme, the minister highlighted the vital role played by nurses in the healthcare system, stating that they remain closely involved in patient care throughout treatment and recovery. He said the nursing profession reflects compassion, commitment and selfless service, often under challenging conditions.

Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jaiswal said nursing personnel continued to provide care despite significant health risks and difficult working environments. He noted that nurses were among the frontline workers during one of the most difficult phases faced by the healthcare sector.

The minister also said nurses often look after patients with the same care and sensitivity as family members, adding that their contribution to healthcare deserves greater appreciation and respect.

Jaiswal thanked Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and said the state government is making continuous efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve facilities and streamline administrative systems.

During the programme, several nursing professionals were honoured for their services, including Reena Rajput, Neelima Sharma, Ranjana Singh Thakur, Suman Dewangan, Komeshwari Navrange, Pragati Satpute, Sheetal Soni and Namita Daniel, UNI reported.

Earlier this month, President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 to nursing professionals at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 12. Fifteen nurses from different parts of the country and diverse healthcare settings were recognised for their outstanding contribution to public health services and community welfare.
