The Central Government has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art 2,000-bed hospital in Sector 53 of Chandigarh. The facility, to be constructed on a 23.45-acre site with a built-up area of 1.80 lakh square meters, will be developed in three phases with a total investment of Rs 1,000 crore, excluding land costs.
Of the total project cost, Rs 500 crore will be allocated for construction and another Rs 500 crore for procuring advanced medical equipment. The project will be funded by the Central Government, as per recommendations by NITI Aayog.
Phase 1 will feature critical units such as a mother and child care block, trauma and burn unit, emergency services, mental health and drug rehabilitation centre, advanced diagnostic facilities, a clinical laboratory, and an academic block. In Phase 2, a centre for elderly care and an advanced disease control unit will be added. The remaining infrastructure will be completed in Phase 3.
Designed to match the standards of premier institutes like AIIMS, the hospital will also house residential quarters, a medical college, and a helipad to support emergency services. The project was greenlit following the Union Home Secretary’s visit in 2024 and is intended to ease the burden on existing hospitals like PGIMER and GMSH-16, while catering to the broader healthcare needs of North India.
