The Central Government has approved an additional ₹700 crore for the development of AIIMS Darbhanga, providing a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in Bihar. The decision was taken during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening medical facilities in underserved regions. With the latest approval, the total estimated cost of the AIIMS Darbhanga project has increased from ₹1,264 crore to approximately ₹1,964 crore. Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda informed Parliament that the additional funds are aimed at accelerating the pace of construction and resolving earlier implementation challenges.
The project has faced delays in the past due to logistical and execution hurdles. Officials stated that the fresh financial allocation is expected to remove bottlenecks and expedite construction activities. The move is likely to bring renewed momentum to the long-pending healthcare project in the Mithila region.
Once completed, the institute will include:
- A 750-bed super-specialty hospital
- A medical college with around 100-125 MBBS seats
- A nursing college with approximately 60 seats
- Multiple advanced specialty departments
The facility is expected to serve not only Bihar but also neighbouring states significantly improving access to tertiary healthcare services. The AIIMS at Darbhanga is the second such institute in Bihar and is being developed to reduce the burden on existing healthcare facilities. The project is expected to enhance medical education, research and specialized treatment capabilities in the region benefiting millions of people.
The additional funding is expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and contribute to economic growth in the Mithila region. The Centre’s approval of ₹700 crore for AIIMS Darbhanga marks a crucial step in accelerating one of Bihar’s most important healthcare projects. With increased funding and renewed focus the institute is expected to play a transformative role in improving healthcare delivery and medical education in eastern India.
