The Union Government has cleared funding of ₹33,081.82 crore for states and union territories to upgrade health facilities under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), the Health Ministry announced. This funding, spread over 2021–22 to 2025–26, is part of a larger effort to strengthen healthcare at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
PM-ABHIM, launched in 2021, is a centrally sponsored scheme with some components fully funded by the Centre. The mission has a total budget of ₹64,180 crore and is designed to prepare the country’s health system to face future pandemics and emergencies by expanding public health facilities.
What the mission includes
Under the scheme’s CSS component, states and UTs are receiving support for five major initiatives:
- 17,788 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs): upgrading existing sub‑centres without buildings into Health and Wellness Centres.
- 11,024 Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (U‑AAMs): new facilities to serve slum populations and underserved urban areas.
- 3,382 Block Public Health Units (BPHUs).
- 730 Integrated Public Health Labs (IPHLs).
- 602 critical care hospital blocks: specialised units in districts with populations over 5 lakh for advanced treatment.
Progress so far
Within the approved ₹33,081.82 crore allocation, the following projects have already been sanctioned for construction or upgrade:
- 10,609 AAMs
- 5,456 U‑AAMs
- 2,151 BPHUs
- 744 IPHLs
- 621 critical care hospital blocks
These approvals are part of the phased work plan running from 2021–22 to 2025–26, aimed at significantly strengthening India’s health infrastructure.
