The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is undergoing a significant digital transformation. Starting April 28, 2025, CGHS will officially transition to a new digital platform and Health Management Information System (HMIS). As part of this shift, the older websites www.cghs.gov.in and www.cghs.nic.in will be permanently deactivated. All services will now be accessible through the new portal: www.cghs.mohfw.gov.in, as per a circular from the Ministry of Health.
In addition to the updated website, a new CGHS mobile app has also been launched for both Android and iOS platforms, offering an improved interface and enhanced digital features.
To ensure a smooth transition, all CGHS services including health centres were closed on April 26, 2025, for a day. This pause allowed for complete data migration and system switchover, ensuring uninterrupted services once the new system went live.
Changes in the New System:
- PAN-Based Identification: Beneficiaries will now be identified using their PAN number, reducing the need for repeated document verification and simplifying eligibility confirmation.
- Integrated Payments: Contribution payments will now go directly through the Bharat Kosh Portal, eliminating manual entries and reducing issues related to errors or refunds.
- Pre-Payment Information: When applying for a CGHS card, users will first receive full details on eligibility and the payment amount. Payments will only be accepted after this step, preventing confusion or premature deposits.
- Online Card Services: Services like card transfers, adding dependents, and other card modifications can now be handled completely online, saving time and avoiding visits to CGHS offices.
- Real-Time Updates: Beneficiaries will receive SMS and email notifications at every stage of their application process, improving transparency and reducing the need for follow-ups.
- Cybersecurity Upgrades: For enhanced security, all users must reset their passwords the first time they log in to the new platform.
- Improved Department Mapping: Government departments will now be identified through DDO (Drawing and Disbursing Officer) and PAO (Pay and Accounts Officer) codes, as listed in employee salary slips enhancing backend record accuracy.
Why the Change Was Needed:
The previous CGHS software, in use since 2005, had become outdated and lacked modern IT capabilities and security standards. The new HMIS aims to modernize CGHS services, making them faster, more secure, and user-friendly. These upgrades are expected to provide a smoother experience for millions of beneficiaries and make the delivery of government health services more efficient and transparent.
