Marking 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, the Union government has released a healthcare report card showcasing key achievements in health infrastructure, medical education, insurance coverage and public health services over the past decade. The report presents what the government describes as a transformation of India’s healthcare system through expanded access, affordability and improved medical facilities.
According to the report, the flagship Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has emerged as one of the world’s largest government-funded health insurance programmes. More than 43 crore Ayushman cards have been issued while over 12 crore patients have received treatment under the scheme resulting in significant savings for beneficiary families. The report also highlights a major expansion in healthcare infrastructure. The number of medical colleges in the country has increased from 387 in 2014 to more than 800 in 2026. During the same period, MBBS seats rose from 51,348 to 1,28,976 while postgraduate medical seats increased from 31,185 to 85,822, aimed at addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals.
The government noted that the number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has nearly tripled rising from eight institutions in 2014 to 23 currently. It said the expansion has improved access to advanced healthcare services and medical education in several states. Public investment in healthcare has also witnessed a substantial rise. The health budget allocation increased from ₹35,163 crore in 2014 to more than ₹1.06 lakh crore in 2026. The report states that government expenditure on health as a share of total healthcare spending has risen significantly helping reduce out-of-pocket expenses for citizens.
Among other achievements, the report cites over 60 crore cancer screenings more than 42 crore tele-consultations and the establishment of over 1.86 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the country. The government also highlighted improvements in maternal and child healthcare with institutional deliveries reaching 96 per cent in rural areas and 98 per cent in urban areas. The healthcare report card forms part of a broader review of the Modi government’s performance across sectors as it completes 12 years in office.
