Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171 near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which struck a hostel housing students, BJ Medical College (BJMC) in Ahmedabad has announced the postponement of all MBBS examinations until further notice.
According to a report by IANS, the institution has suspended all ongoing and upcoming internal theory and practical exams for MBBS students. In addition, the college has cancelled the summer vacation for its medical faculty and doctors, directing them to assist in treating the injured.
The accident has had a major impact on over 500 students, particularly those in their first and second years, many of whom were residing in the hostel building that was hit by the aircraft. The aircraft’s wing reportedly collided directly with the mess-cum-hostel structure, leaving parts of the facility severely damaged.
The incident has caused deep trauma among students, with more than 200 residents, including MBBS interns, leaving the hostel and returning home out of fear and distress. Around 40 students who were present at the time of the crash are reportedly in a state of severe psychological shock.
A senior BJMC official stated, “Considering the emotional and mental well-being of our students, and the significant logistical challenges following the damage to the hostel and dining facilities, all examinations are postponed until students are able to recover.”
The mess area, which also served as the hostel’s dining hall on the first and second floors, is now non-functional, leaving students and interns without regular meals and essential services.
In response to the ongoing crisis and the surge in medical needs, the college has also recalled all medical staff from their scheduled summer break. The second phase of the vacation, set to begin on June 13, has been revoked, and all doctors and faculty members have been asked to report for duty from June 14 to support the treatment of injured crash victims at the Civil Hospital, where BJMC personnel are actively involved.
