PM Modi Highlights Ayushman Bharat’s Role in Cancer Treatment and India’s Fight Against Malaria
In the 117th episode of his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the transformative impact of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in easing the financial burden on cancer patients across India. He highlighted the nation’s strides in combating cancer and malaria, crediting these achievements to collective efforts and robust healthcare initiatives.
Ayushman Bharat – A hope for Cancer Patients
Prime Minister Modi underscored how the Ayushman Bharat scheme has emerged as a crucial support system for underprivileged cancer patients. Citing a recent study published in the Lancet Medical Journal, he stated that the probability of initiating cancer treatment on time has significantly improved in India.
The Prime Minister elaborated that under Ayushman Bharat, 90% of cancer patients are now able to begin their treatment within 30 days of diagnosis. This shift marks a significant departure from the past when financial constraints often prevented early detection and timely intervention.
“Previously, many poor patients hesitated to seek medical attention for cancer due to the high cost of tests and treatment. However, with the support provided by Ayushman Bharat, these barriers are being dismantled. Patients are stepping forward to undergo necessary screenings and treatments without delay,” Modi explained.
He emphasized that the scheme has not only facilitated timely cancer care but has also substantially reduced out-of-pocket expenses for families. The initiative, he noted, continues to play a pivotal role in making quality healthcare accessible and affordable to millions.
India’s Persistent Battle Against Malaria
Prime Minister Modi also reflected on the centuries-old battle against malaria, describing it as one of humanity’s longest-standing health challenges. He acknowledged that malaria has posed a formidable threat for over 4,000 years and continues to affect vulnerable populations worldwide.
“At the time of India’s independence, malaria was among the most pressing health crises. Even today, it remains the third leading infectious disease responsible for the death of children aged between one month and five years,” Modi remarked.
However, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the country’s collective efforts in fighting malaria. He cited a World Health Organization (WHO) report which highlights that India has achieved an 80% reduction in malaria cases and related deaths between 2015 and 2023.
Modi attributed this success to widespread public participation, community initiatives, and innovative local models that have driven malaria prevention and control measures across the nation.
Grassroots Initiatives – Key to Malaria Control
During his address, the Prime Minister lauded the tea garden communities of Jorhat, Assam, for their exemplary efforts in combating malaria. Just four years ago, malaria posed a severe threat to the region. However, by uniting as a community, the tea garden dwellers were able to make significant progress in malaria eradication.
“The people of Jorhat adopted innovative strategies, leveraging technology and social media to raise awareness and monitor malaria cases. Their collective action has yielded remarkable results,” Modi stated.
Similarly, he praised the people of Kurukshetra district in Haryana for implementing a community-driven malaria monitoring system.
“In Kurukshetra, public engagement has been instrumental in controlling malaria. By conducting street plays and radio broadcasts, the community effectively spread awareness about mosquito breeding and prevention measures,” he explained.
A Unified Effort for Healthier Communities
Prime Minister Modi concluded by reiterating that the fight against diseases like cancer and malaria can only be won through collective determination and community participation. He urged citizens to continue supporting government healthcare initiatives and engage actively in local health programs.
“These achievements reflect the strength and resilience of our people. Together, we can overcome the most daunting health challenges and pave the way for a healthier and more prosperous India,” Modi affirmed.
