Reaffirming the Assam government’s commitment to developing a robust, modern and future-ready healthcare system, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 28 reviewed the progress of several major healthcare infrastructure projects during his visit to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

The Chief Minister began his visit at the GMCH campus, where he inspected the proposed site for a new 3,000-bed state-of-the-art hospital. Planned as one of the largest healthcare infrastructure projects in the region, the facility is expected to substantially strengthen Assam’s capabilities in patient care, medical education and advanced medical research.

During the inspection, Director of Medical Education Dr Manoj Choudhury, GMCH Principal Dr Achyut Baishya and other senior officials briefed the Chief Minister on the project’s planning, design and implementation schedule. Sarma reviewed the progress and stressed the need for timely execution to ensure the hospital emerges as a landmark addition to the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Chief Minister later visited PMCH to assess the construction progress of the upcoming 500-bed modern hospital. He also chaired a review meeting attended by officials from the Health Department, hospital authorities and representatives of the executing agency. Discussions focused on the status of civil works, timely completion and handover of facilities, construction of the boundary wall, faculty residences, sports infrastructure and other essential components of the campus.

Sarma directed all stakeholders to complete the project within the prescribed timeline while maintaining the highest standards of quality, transparency and accountability.

Highlighting the government’s vision of strengthening healthcare services across Assam, the Chief Minister said that world-class medical infrastructure is essential for providing accessible, affordable and quality healthcare to every citizen. He urged all departments and agencies involved to work in close coordination to expedite the projects and build a healthcare system capable of meeting the state’s future requirements.

Earlier in the day, Sarma also met several distinguished personalities from various sectors at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur. According to an official statement, the discussions focused on public welfare, inclusive development and strategies to advance the vision of a self-reliant Assam. The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of constructive engagement between the government and different sections of society in accelerating the state’s overall development and achieving shared goals.
