Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. has strengthened its footprint in western India with the launch of a new multi-speciality hospital in Pune. The facility has gone live with 250 beds in the first phase and will expand gradually.

According to Managing Director Suneeta Reddy, the Pune hospital is expected to scale up rapidly, driven by strong regional demand and Apollo’s expanding network. She noted that the unit should achieve around 50% occupancy in the next five months. The hospital is aiming for an average revenue of nearly ₹50,000 per occupied bed, supported by advanced specialities and an experienced clinical team already onboard.

Reddy said the new centre is on track to break even within 10 months.

With the addition of the Pune facility, Apollo now has a combined capacity of about 1,000 beds across its hospitals in Navi Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik. As part of the phased development plan, another 250 beds will be added to the Pune hospital over the next two years.

Addressing questions on India’s changing labour regulations, Reddy said the hospital chain does not anticipate any adverse impact since it engages minimal contract labour. In fact, she believes the updated rules will likely raise health awareness and insurance adoption benefiting the entire healthcare ecosystem, including smaller nursing homes.

Commenting on competition, Reddy pointed out that India continues to face a significant shortage of hospital beds. The country requires nearly 4 lakh additional beds, while organised corporate hospital chains currently offer only 50,000–70,000 beds. This fundamental supply gap, she said, helps sustain demand and lowers competitive pressures. She also highlighted Apollo’s strong internal talent pool and its ongoing ability to attract specialists from abroad.

While acknowledging that the cost of hiring specialists has edged up, Reddy said the increase has been kept to about 2%, and doctor expenses are expected to remain under 22% of overall revenue.

Reddy also detailed Apollo’s larger expansion strategy. The group plans to invest ₹8,000 crore to add 4,300 beds over the next four years, with much of this growth focused on markets where Apollo currently has a smaller presence.

Upcoming projects include a new hospital in Kolkata, a 250-bed expansion at Sonarpur, a 350-bed facility in Hyderabad, and the operationalisation of a newly acquired 180-bed hospital in Bengaluru.
