The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai is set to commence full-fledged outpatient department (OPD) services from January 1, 2027, the Union Health Ministry informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on September 17.
The timeline was submitted during the hearing of two public interest litigations filed over delays in the development of the institute and the start of its healthcare and academic services. Following the Centre’s submission, the court disposed of both petitions.
According to a communication from AIIMS Madurai submitted to the court, preparations are underway to operationalise the OPD as directed by the Union Health Ministry.
Permanent campus work progresses
The Centre also provided an update on the construction of the institute’s permanent campus. Overall progress is expected to reach 59% by the end of September, with Phase I substantially ahead of Phase II. About 88% of Phase I and 35% of Phase II work are expected to be completed by then, according to TNIE.
MBBS students shifted to Madurai campus
AIIMS Madurai has also completed the phased relocation of its MBBS students to the permanent campus. Students from all five batches admitted between 2021 and 2025 were moved from the temporary arrangement in Ramanathapuram after hostel and dining facilities became available at Madurai.
The relocation was completed on August 31, marking another step in the institute’s transition towards operations at its permanent campus.
With the OPD scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027, AIIMS Madurai is moving closer to providing outpatient healthcare services from its permanent facility.
