The Medical Superintendent of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur, Dr. Mahesh Devnani, has stepped down from his post following a controversy involving the treatment of a former Union Minister’s wife, according to a media report.
Although Dr. Devnani has submitted his resignation to the AIIMS President, he continues to work at the institute for now. Neither he nor the AIIMS administration has issued a public statement on the matter.
The incident reportedly began on August 14, when the former Minister’s wife who is also an MP and a member of the AIIMS Institute body visited AIIMS Jodhpur for medical care. Dr. Devnani is said to have denied her a free consultation and delayed paperwork, citing hospital rules. This reportedly led the MP to summon him to his residence and reprimand him over the refusal.
In response, AIIMS Jodhpur circulated a letter to all department heads and doctors on August 20, emphasizing the need to maintain courtesy and proper conduct towards Members of Parliament and their families. Shortly after this communication, Dr. Devnani is believed to have tendered his resignation.
Dr. Devnani took charge as Superintendent last year. Before joining AIIMS Jodhpur, he served as Associate Professor of Hospital Administration and Joint Medical Superintendent at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical (JLN) Medical College, Ajmer, and holds a Master’s in Hospital Administration from PGIMER, as well as a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
