AIIMS Gorakhpur has approved a set of new academic programmes (with some first of kind in the country) during the 8th meeting of its Standing Academic Committee, marking a key step towards expanding medical education, advanced training, and research at the institute.

The newly sanctioned courses include DM programmes in neurology, pain medicine, clinical pharmacology, and critical care medicine under the Department of Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine & Critical Care. Post-doctoral certificate courses (PDCC) have also been cleared in trauma anaesthesia, spine trauma, pelvic-acetabular surgery, and adolescent gynaecology.

Notably, some of these programmes such as the PDCC in adolescent gynaecology are the first of their kind in the country. In addition, a post-doctoral fellowship in maternal-foetal medicine has been approved under the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

Other courses that received approval include an MS in trauma surgery, PhD in Nursing, MSc in nursing psychology, and a BSc in operation theatre technology.

During the meeting, Executive Director Ashoka Jahnavi Prasad also drew attention to the growing concern of student suicides across educational institutions. He stressed the urgent need for continuous psychological support and preventive measures within the campus. Highlighting the relevance of mental health, he noted that introducing specialised programmes like the MSc in nursing psychology will help strengthen the mental health workforce and make psychological care more accessible for both students and the wider community.
