India is strengthening defence medical research through collaborations between the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and leading health, science and technology institutions. The initiative focuses on developing advanced, India-specific medical solutions for soldiers operating in challenging battlefield and climatic conditions.
Leading Institutions Come Together
The AFMS is working with premier institutions including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The Ministry of Defence shared the details in response to a letter by Rajya Sabha member Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, who called for greater investment in defence-oriented medical research within the AFMS and Armed Forces Medical Corps.
Focus on AI, Trauma and Bionics
The collaborations cover a wide range of emerging areas, including military trauma, aerospace medicine, infectious diseases, digital health and AI-enabled diagnostics.
Research is also being undertaken in combat casualty care, robotic surgery, wearable technologies, battlefield telemedicine, next-generation sequencing and advanced prosthetics and bionics.
Research Tailored to Indian Soldiers
The initiative aims to develop technologies specifically suited to India’s operational requirements. This includes the country’s diverse climatic conditions, battlefield environments and the physiological characteristics of Indian military personnel.
The approach seeks to bridge the gap between cutting-edge medical research and the practical healthcare needs of armed forces personnel in operational settings.
Learning From Global Defence Medical Research
Gopchade highlighted international models where military medical research is closely integrated with defence planning. He cited the US Army Medical Research and Development Command’s work in areas such as blast injuries, chemical warfare defence, traumatic brain injury, combat casualty care and neurological resilience.
He also referred to military health research programmes in the UK and Canada as examples of defence-focused medical innovation.
AFMS Undertaking Strategic Projects
According to the Ministry of Defence, the AFMS is already undertaking multiple strategic defence-oriented medical research projects with leading institutions.
The collaborations are aimed at developing advanced medical technologies and solutions that can strengthen prevention, diagnosis, treatment and emergency care for India’s armed forces.
