The Centre has significantly expanded India’s digital health infrastructure under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) by creating a nationwide Health Facility Registry (HFR) with 5.36 lakh verified healthcare facilities registered as of July 20, 2026. The registry forms a key component of the country’s digital health ecosystem, enabling patients, healthcare providers and insurers to access standardized and verified information on healthcare establishments across India. The Health Facility Registry is a comprehensive digital repository of verified public and private healthcare facilities including hospitals, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, imaging centres, pharmacies and blood banks across different systems of medicine. It is designed to create a unique digital identity for every participating health facility, improving discoverability, interoperability and seamless integration with ABDM services.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the milestone accompanies the creation of 94.87 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs and registration of 10.09 lakh healthcare professionals under the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) reflecting rapid growth of India’s digital health ecosystem. The figures were shared by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
Registration on the Health Facility Registry enables healthcare providers to become part of the ABDM network allowing patients to locate verified facilities through the ABHA application securely link their digital health records with consent and facilitate paperless healthcare delivery. The registry also supports integration with the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) enabling faster and more efficient processing of insurance claims.
The government has been encouraging healthcare facilities to adopt ABDM-enabled software through the Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) which provides financial incentives to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, pharmacies and digital solution providers for generating interoperable digital health records and digitising healthcare services. The latest milestone builds on the government’s broader efforts to strengthen India’s digital public infrastructure for healthcare. Earlier this month the Union Health Ministry noted that ABDM has emerged as one of the world’s largest digital health ecosystems and emphasised that the next phase of the mission will focus on increasing adoption and utilisation of digital health services across states and healthcare institutions.
