Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has outlined a series of healthcare expansion measures, focusing on strengthening hospital infrastructure, increasing medical education capacity, addressing workforce shortages and expanding digital health services. She emphasised that public-private partnerships would play a key role in positioning Delhi as a leading medical hub.

Speaking at the inauguration of a newly established In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Centre at Sant Parmanand Hospital on November 3, Gupta reiterated the government’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable healthcare.

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the Delhi government has supplemented the Centre’s ₹5 lakh health cover with an additional ₹5 lakh, taking the total annual coverage to ₹10 lakh per beneficiary family. More than 8.94 lakh Ayushman cards have been approved in the national capital. Additionally, over 3.09 lakh senior citizens aged above 70 years have been enrolled under Ayushman Vay Vandana.

The Chief Minister said 415 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 29 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been operationalised to improve access to primary healthcare and affordable medicines. Five major infrastructure projects worth ₹503.49 crore are also underway in government hospitals. Existing additions include a Neuro ICU at GB Pant Hospital and 300 dialysis machines across 16 government hospitals.

Medical education and workforce expansion

Delhi is increasing its MBBS seats from 595 to 820 and postgraduate medical seats from 553 to 762. A new medical college is also being developed at Indira Gandhi Hospital, Dwarka, at an estimated cost of ₹805.99 crore.

The government has recruited more than 1,200 nurses and 954 senior resident doctors, while over 4,000 additional healthcare posts have been approved to strengthen the medical workforce.

Digital and preventive healthcare initiatives

More than one crore ABHA IDs have been generated in Delhi, while the Digital Health Management System has been implemented across 38 government hospitals.

Preventive healthcare measures include 56 free screening tests for newborns, 10,000 free cancer screenings and HPV vaccination drives for girls aged 9-14 years.

The newly inaugurated IVF Centre at Sant Parmanand Hospital offers advanced reproductive technologies, including Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), along with clinical evaluation, fertility treatment and counselling services supported by fertility specialists and embryologists.
