A dinner at JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar’s Romano restaurant turned into a hygiene concern after cardiologist and Fortis Healthcare chairman Dr. Ashok Seth said he spotted a baby cockroach crawling on his dining table.
Seth shared a video of the incident on social media on Sunday, referring to the insect as “Roachie”. He said the cockroach remained on the table despite attempts to make it leave and that the incident affected his appetite, prompting him and his companions to leave without completing their meal.
The cardiologist also tagged Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and JW Marriott in his post, asking for attention to the hygiene issue.
Speaking to NDTV, Seth described the incident as a serious hygiene concern, particularly because he was dining with foreign delegates. He questioned the standards expected at a five-star hotel and said the episode was embarrassing.
Marriott Bonvoy Assist subsequently responded to the social media post, apologised for the incident and said the matter would be investigated.
The incident comes amid increased food-safety inspections in Maharashtra under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, who has been involved in enforcement actions concerning hygiene and food-safety violations at eateries and food establishments.
