The Delhi government has approved a proposal to double the monthly incentive for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sept 15.
The decision was taken during a Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Gupta. The government said the move is aimed at recognising the contribution of ASHA workers and strengthening primary healthcare services across the city.
According to the Chief Minister, 6,725 ASHA workers are currently working in Delhi. Each ASHA worker is generally associated with around 2,000 people or 400 families.
ASHAs Key to Primary Healthcare
ASHA workers serve as a link between communities and the healthcare system. Their responsibilities include providing health information at the household level, encouraging vaccination and supporting pregnant women and new mothers in accessing healthcare services.
Gupta also highlighted the role played by ASHA workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they supported community-level healthcare efforts.
Focus on Women’s Economic Empowerment
The Delhi government said the increased incentive is expected to provide greater financial support to ASHA workers and encourage them to continue their community-based healthcare activities.
The government also linked the move to women’s economic empowerment, while noting that stronger support for ASHA workers can contribute to improving the delivery of primary healthcare services in Delhi.
