The Uttar Pradesh government has doubled the monthly internship stipend for MBBS and BDS students in government medical colleges and medical universities, increasing it from ₹12,000 to ₹25,000. The decision was approved by the state Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Stipend Increased From ₹12,000 to ₹25,000
Under the new decision, eligible MBBS and BDS interns undergoing compulsory rotatory internship in government-run medical institutions across Uttar Pradesh will receive ₹25,000 per month.
This marks the second major increase in the internship stipend under the Yogi Adityanath government. In 2021, the stipend was raised from ₹7,500 to ₹12,000 per month.
Interns to Benefit Across Government Medical Institutions
The revised stipend will apply to students who have completed their MBBS or BDS examinations and are undertaking their compulsory internship.
During the internship, medical and dental graduates gain hands-on clinical experience while assisting doctors and healthcare teams in wards, OPDs and emergency departments. They may also be assigned night duties as part of their training.
The government said the increase is aimed at providing greater financial support to interns during their practical training and encouraging their contribution to patient care in government hospitals.
Hike Comes After Interns’ Protest
The Cabinet decision comes days after MBBS interns from several government medical colleges protested over the demand for a higher stipend.
The demonstration was held at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on August 22. Interns from KGMU, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur and Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut, among other institutions, took part in the protest.
The revised stipend is also expected to narrow the gap between Uttar Pradesh and states and central institutions offering higher internship stipends.
Cabinet Approves 25 Lakh Tablets for Students
In another decision, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the purchase of 25 lakh tablets under the Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Scheme.
The devices will be distributed free of cost to eligible students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and skill-development programmes.
The state has allocated ₹2,374.60 crore for the scheme in the 2026-27 budget. The initiative is intended to improve students’ access to digital learning resources, online courses, government schemes, employment opportunities and self-employment services.
Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said the programme will benefit students enrolled in higher education, technical and health education, skill-development programmes and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
