Tripura has announced an ambitious plan to make its entire healthcare system fully digital by October 31, 2026, marking a major step toward strengthening digital health services across the state under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
The announcement was made by Health Secretary Kiran Gitte during a workshop on the Integrated Health Information Management System (IHMIS), where West Tripura was officially launched as the state’s Model District for digital healthcare integration.
The initiative aims to create a seamless digital health ecosystem that connects patients, hospitals, healthcare professionals and government health services through a unified technology platform. The move is expected to improve transparency, efficiency and accessibility of healthcare services across Tripura.
National Health Authority (NHA) CEO Sunil Kumar Barnwal attended the workshop along with senior officials from the Health and Family Welfare Department, National Health Mission and ABDM. During his visit to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Agartala Civil Hospital, Barnwal reviewed the hospital’s digital infrastructure, paperless workflows and the use of “Computer on Wheels” systems that allow healthcare staff to update patient records directly at the bedside.
Barnwal emphasized that achieving a fully integrated digital health ecosystem would require widespread adoption of ABHA IDs, registration of healthcare facilities under the Health Facility Registry (HFR), enrolment of doctors in the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), and integration of hospitals with ABDM-enabled software platforms.
According to Kiran Gitte, several healthcare regulatory bodies in the state, including the Medical, Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Councils, have already transitioned to online applications, digital payments and electronic certificate issuance. He said the government is working intensively to complete the digital transformation process within the stipulated timeline.
Tripura has already generated more than two lakh ABHA IDs, creating a strong foundation for digital healthcare services. Once the system is fully operational, doctors will be able to securely access patients’ previous medical records, enabling better continuity of care, faster diagnosis and more informed clinical decision-making.
The state government plans to showcase the completion of the digital healthcare initiative later this year, positioning Tripura among the leading states in the adoption of digital health technologies in India.
