Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a new health insurance initiative aimed at providing cashless medical coverage of up to ₹10 lakh for economically weaker families in the state.
During a review meeting with the Health Department in Shimla, the Chief Minister said the government is preparing to roll out a comprehensive health insurance policy to improve access to quality healthcare for underprivileged households. Under the proposed scheme, eligible families will receive health insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh by paying a nominal premium.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative is expected to benefit nearly 10 lakh families across different sections of society. He stated that the scheme would make Himachal Pradesh the first state in the country to offer such extensive health insurance coverage at an affordable premium.
To ensure access to advanced medical care, the government plans to empanel leading multi-speciality and tertiary care hospitals under the scheme. This will enable beneficiaries to receive specialized treatment without facing financial hardship.
Sukhu emphasized that the policy has been designed to ensure equitable and affordable healthcare access for all eligible citizens. The scheme is also expected to facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment through a streamlined and patient-friendly healthcare delivery system.
The Chief Minister further highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across district hospitals and government medical colleges so that quality medical services are available closer to people’s homes. He also directed officials to procure medical equipment strictly in line with the standards laid down by All India Institute of Medical Sciences to enhance the quality of healthcare services in the state.
