Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to virtually inaugurate three major healthcare facilities at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) the Advanced Neurosciences Centre, the Mother and Child Care Centre, and a new Critical Care Block. According to institute sources, preparations are underway for an online inauguration, with a physical visit by the Prime Minister currently considered unlikely. His last visit to PGI was in 2015 for the institute’s convocation ceremony.

PGI authorities are making arrangements for the virtual event and working to ensure a seamless digital launch. A committee has been constituted to oversee technical planning and coordination. Officials noted that while PGI has hosted numerous national and international live broadcasts, an event of this significance requires extensive preparation.

The inauguration will mark the opening of healthcare infrastructure projects valued at nearly ₹1,000 crore. Among them is the ₹490-crore Advanced Neurosciences Centre, sanctioned in 2017 and constructed beginning in 2020. The facility started outpatient services on April 20 and was originally scheduled to be inaugurated by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda during PGI’s April 30 convocation, but the programme was deferred.

The ₹485-crore Mother and Child Care Centre has also been completed and is expected to become fully operational later this month. The 430-bed, five-storey facility recently came into focus after advanced medical equipment worth ₹150 crore, donated by Infosys in 2024, remained unused pending the formal inauguration.

The new Critical Care Block will also be launched during the virtual event, adding substantial critical care capacity and further enhancing healthcare services in the region. The official inauguration date is yet to be announced.
