The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration has launched a major crackdown on blood banks across the state suspending operations at seven centres after detecting serious irregularities during inspections. The move is part of a wider effort to ensure safe blood transfusion practices and strengthen regulatory oversight in the healthcare sector. The action follows a large-scale inspection carried out by inter-district teams of drug inspectors. A total of over 40 blood centres operating under charitable trusts and societies were inspected across multiple districts including Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Baghpat, Gautam Buddh Nagar and Varanasi.
During the inspections authorities identified multiple violations including discrepancies in blood donation records, improper storage practices, lapses in safety protocols and failure to maintain statutory registers. Such irregularities raised serious concerns about the safety and quality of blood being supplied for transfusions. Following these findings, operations at seven blood centres were immediately halted. Officials have also issued show-cause notices to several non-compliant facilities, warning that strict action including licence cancellation and legal proceedings will be initiated if deficiencies are not rectified within the stipulated time.
Medical experts have warned that transfusion of inadequately screened or improperly stored blood can lead to severe infections and life-threatening complications. The crackdown aims to prevent such risks and ensure that only safe and properly handled blood reaches patients. Officials acknowledged that similar irregularities have been reported in the past as well. In earlier enforcement actions, licences of some blood banks were cancelled and legal action was taken against individuals involved in violations. The latest crackdown highlights ongoing concerns regarding compliance and accountability in blood bank operations.
The crackdown by the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration underscores the need for strict monitoring of blood banks to safeguard public health. Authorities have indicated that inspections will continue with zero tolerance for violations that compromise patient safety.
