ICMR Working on Single Diagnostic Test to Detect Multiple Infections

A single diagnostic test that can identify multiple infections ranging from dengue, influenza and Covid-19 to typhoid from just one patient sample may soon become a reality. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is developing a new diagnostic tool aimed at helping doctors accurately determine the exact illness a patient is suffering from and begin targeted treatment at the earliest.

At present, patients often undergo several different tests to rule out various infections with overlapping symptoms. This process can be costly, time-consuming and, in some cases, may result in delayed or inappropriate treatment. By integrating multiple disease checks into one test, the ICMR hopes to significantly reduce diagnostic delays and improve patient care.

The initiative is particularly significant as India faces a growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Studies suggest that up to 83 per cent of patients may harbour bacteria resistant to antibiotics. A precise, multi-infection diagnostic test could help clinicians avoid unnecessary antibiotic use, a crucial step in curbing this escalating public health threat.

Once developed and rolled out, the test is expected to be especially useful during disease outbreaks and public health emergencies, strengthening India’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively while safeguarding more lives.
