Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), urging stronger early detection efforts and use of technology to achieve India’s 2025 TB elimination target five years ahead of the global goal.

He emphasized analysing TB trends by location and occupation to better target high-risk groups. Volunteers, or Ni-kshay Mitras, were encouraged to use tech to educate and support patients.

India, despite having the highest global TB burden (26%), has seen an 18% drop in TB incidence and a 21% drop in mortality from 2015 to 2023, with treatment coverage rising to 85%.

Key updates included expanded diagnostic infrastructure, new treatment regimens, and nutrition support through the PM Ni-kshay scheme. Nearly 3 million food baskets have been distributed so far.

The recent 100-day TB Mukt Bharat campaign screened 129.7 million people, detecting 719,000 new TB cases, including 285,000 asymptomatic ones.
