In a significant move to enhance healthcare services at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the deployment of 600 staff nurses and 43 Operation Theatre Assistants (OTAs). This decision aims to ensure prompt and efficient medical attention for patients. The announcement was made during a Health Department meeting attended by key officials and senior officers.

Strengthening Healthcare Workforce

The Chief Minister emphasized the state government’s commitment to bolstering healthcare services at IGMC and other medical institutions across Himachal Pradesh. The deployment of 600 staff nurses and 43 OTAs is part of a broader initiative to fill vacant positions in the healthcare sector. This move is expected to address the shortage of medical personnel and improve the quality of care provided to patients.

In addition to the deployment of nurses and OTAs, the Chief Minister announced the filling of 30 posts of Medical Officers (MOs) to strengthen the department of emergency medicines at IGMC. This measure aims to ensure that the emergency department is adequately staffed to handle the high volume of patients requiring urgent medical care.


“The filling of these posts will strengthen our emergency medical services, ensuring that patients receive the necessary medical attention without delay,” stated CM Sukhu. He highlighted the importance of having a robust emergency department capable of responding to various medical emergencies efficiently.


Commitment to Quality Healthcare

During the meeting, CM Sukhu reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare services. He stressed the importance of enhancing infrastructure and filling vacant positions for doctors, paramedical staff, and technicians to ensure specialized medical care within the state.

The Chief Minister announced an allocation of Rs. 25 crores for the modernization of IGMC. This funding will be used to incorporate modern technologies and equipment, ensuring that the medical college is equipped to provide advanced medical care. The modernization efforts will include upgrading existing facilities and introducing new technologies to improve patient care.

The state government is committed to providing better working conditions for doctors and supporting staff at this institute. This measure aims to attract and retain highly skilled medical professionals, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care.

Study to Identify Prevalent Ailments

The state government will conduct a study to identify prevalent ailments and high-footfall Outpatient Departments (OPDs). This study will enable the government to increase doctor strength and facilities proportionally, ensuring that healthcare resources are allocated efficiently.

Sudha Devi, Secretary to Chief Minister Rakesh Kanwar, Director Health Services Dr. Gopal Berry, and other senior officers.
